Chronic Pain Coaching

Chronic Pain Coaching CIC supports those disabled with chronic pain within Plymouth and surrounding areas. We run pain cafes to connect people, provide peer support, and give people skills to self-manage their chronic pain condition.

Each session runs for 2 hours and involves small groups of up to 15 people who are supported by one or more pain coaches. The coaches have lived experience and manage chronic pain. They facilitate the sessions by providing expertise and resources to help you with everyday life. We encourage exercise as part of lifestyle improvement, and we can give you lots of advice around key areas such as sleep management.

Chronic Pain Coaching is part of a Plymouth NHS pilot programme aiming to deprescribe people from opioid medication, and the directors themselves now manage their pain levels without medication.

What happens in a pain cafe?

The start of each session involves social time with free tea, coffee, and snacks. We then have a 30-minute guided movement session with a qualified instructor. In our Unit 8 gym session, the movement is on toning tables and is supervised by a qualified instructor.

In the last hour of the session, there is a facilitated discussion around a pain management topic where anyone can ask questions and contribute their experiences.

How much does it cost to attend?

The cafe is free for participants. We are supported by the National Lottery Community Fund, the Livewell Foundation, and the Plymouth Octopus Project. However, to make the cafes sustainable, we would appreciate a donation towards costs, although there is absolutely no obligation.
