People who may be experiencing psychosis can experience the following:

  • Hallucinations
  • Hearing or seeing things that other people don't.
  • Strong changes in mood
  • Experiencing rapid changes in mood, including feeling very depressed or fluctuating between extreme high or low emotional states.
  • Paranoia
  •  Extreme anxiety, fear or suspicion
  • Delusions
  • Holding very unusual beliefs about something implausible, bizarre or obviously untrue.
  • Confusion of thought
  •  Disorganised, confused and disrupted patterns of thoughts and speech.
  • A lack of insight and self-awareness
  •  Unaware that their behaviour is in any way strange or unusual.

If you or somebody you know is experiencing any of the things mentioned above, it is important to speak to someone you trust, such as a teacher at a school, parents, or your GP, as soon as you can so that you can begin getting help.

Studies have shown that the sooner psychosis is treated the better the prognosis but it is also important to remember that it may well not be psychosis. However, it is worth talking to someone if you have any concerns.

How can the Insight team help

The Insight team offers a supportive, respectful relationship with a designated care coordinator who can help with practical issues such as housing, benefits, education and training. They can also make referrals to other teams within The Zone, and other agencies.

A consultant Psychiatrist is available, as appropriate, to discuss, prescribe and monitor medication and mental health needs.

We have a psychologist who can offer psychological approaches including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).

An out of hours emergency telephone service for young people registered with the team.

We run group activities which provide the opportunity to meet with other young people who may also be experiencing psychosis.

We also offer support to the family and carers of the young person.

Who can refer to Insight

Anyone can refer to the Insight team; our referrals often come from GPs, community mental health teams, psychiatrists and frequently Young People themselves, who access The Zone's Drop In .

If you, someone you know or work with, are experiencing any of the symptoms described, please contact the team on 01752 265775 for further guidance on how to make a referral.
Alternatively, Young People can refer themselves by attending our Drop-In Monday to Friday between 12pm—5pm.
