Plymouth Resettlement Support is delivered by a partnership of organisations with long histories of and strong commitments to supporting refugees in the city.

PRSS includes support for newly arrived and settled people to enable them to make sense of their new environment. For some, this means a greater understanding of the culture, values, and language to give meaning to who they are in the UK; for others, it is a change in career direction or the path to their previous professions or employment. We aim to build links, bolster self-esteem, help people find belonging within the wider refugee community, and help people access the wider community.

PRSS is therefore a trauma-informed service for resettled people arriving and living in Plymouth. The partner agencies work collaboratively to provide a wide range of support activities that enable individuals and families to:

  • meet their aspirations
  • feel a sense of belonging
  • build on their assets, skills, and attributes,

so that they feel settled, regain their sense of identity, and can participate fully in society.

The service aims to improve:

  • an individual's sense of home through
    • having access to honest and appropriate housing advice
    • accessing accommodation, temporary or settled
    • tenancy support
  • independence through
    • understanding and exercising rights and entitlements living in the UK
    • creating and growing social connections
    • feeling included, having a say, and being heard
  • individual self-sufficiency through
    • developing employability skills
    • having access to ESOL and English language
    • accessing benefits and welfare appropriately
  • individual health outcomes through
    • accessing the right services
    • better managing physical and mental health
    • trauma-informed support and advocacy

PRSS is delivered by a partnership of 5 local voluntary community sector organisations that have been working with refugees and those awaiting status for more than 20 years. The partners, together with the Plymouth Resettlement Partnership, are:

  • DCRS: support for individuals in the asylum system, immigration advice, community activities
  • START: housing, benefits, access to health, community activities
  • ODILS: ESOL, employability skills, employment mentoring, integration support
  • Path: housing, move-on and tenancy support
  • PDREC: wider community engagement, awareness raising, benefits support, community activities

Each partner provides services and support for refugees and others beyond what is commissioned by PCC for PRSS, so that there are a range of activities and opportunities for members, from access to health care to social and support activities and groups.
