Communication Interaction Team
The Council's Communication Interaction Team works with children and young people who have speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN). This includes children and young people with social communication needs and/or are on the Autism Spectrum (ASC) and children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).

What we do
The Communication Interaction Team is made up of a small team of highly qualified and experienced teachers and specialist support workers. We work closely with children, young people, schools, and parents.
The Communication Interaction Team provides consultation (PDF) [345KB] with schools, assessment and advice on strategies and resources to promote positive outcomes for children and young people. We follow the Graduated Approach.
In addition, our role usually involves joint working with a range of other professionals, including The Educational Psychology Service and Speech and Language Therapists, as part of a Team Around the Child or Young Person.

Training offers and support for school staff and professionals
The Communication Interaction Team works closely with schools to offer a range of training courses and support for school staff and professionals. Training needs can be discussed and agreed upon during a consultation meeting, or schools can contact their Communication Interaction Team link person directly.
How to request advice and support
To access our services, a Request More Help form will need to be completed. This usually follows a consultation between the CIT link person assigned to the school and the Special Educational Needs Coordinator at the school.
Once completed, the Request More Help form must be sent via email to AccessEarlyHelp@plymouth.gov.uk to be processed, along with a Speech, Language, and Communication Checklist and any other supporting evidence.
It is essential that the Request More Help form reflect the steps already taken, following a Graduated Approach to Inclusion.
We might not accept the request if there is insufficient evidence of needs and steps already taken.

Plymouth also has an Early Help and SEND Advice Line through which you can book a conversation with a Family Support Worker to talk about any worries or questions you may have.
Resolving disagreements, mediation and making complaints
We welcome feedback on any concerns and will respond promptly to try to discuss and plan a way forward. If there is no resolution at an initial stage, we follow Plymouth City Council policies and procedures. To get in touch, please email send5252@plymouth.gov.uk.
