SOS!SEN is a national charity aiming to empower parents and carers of children with SEN to tackle successfully the difficulties they face when battling for their children's rights.

SOS!SEN was started in 2002 by a small group of people who had spent much of their lives in education or related services.

We have now been joined by a number of parents and other friends who have children with special education needs and have successfully been through "the system.". We now have a team of 25 part-time volunteers.

SOS!SEN began with the recognition that many parents and carers were not fully aware of their children's rights to an adequate education and of the ways to obtain them.

The Helpline alone now deals with some 3,000 first-time calls each year, and the recent success rate at Tribunal for parents who have attended our workshops or been guided through by us is approximately 95%.

We offer a free, friendly, independent, and confidential telephone helpline for parents and others looking for information and advice on special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

We concentrate on helping people find their way through the legal and bureaucratic maze that is so daunting to so many.

To empower parents and carers, we provide a free and friendly service, including:

  • a telephone Helpline 5 days per week during term time
  • monthly drop in advice centres in some areas during term time
  • information sheets on many topics
  • Workshops on SEN topics to empower parents
  • Document check and 1:1 advice

We concentrate on helping people find their way through the legal and procedural maze, which is so daunting to so many who try to obtain satisfactory provision for a child's special needs.
