This is achieved by interns working in three unpaid supported internships within Derriford Hospital Plymouth, where they learn the skills that employers need through a combination of theory and practical experience. They do this on an honorary contract with the hospital while also being students at City College Plymouth.

The course is for an academic year and runs Monday to Friday from 9am until 4pm; excluding lunch breaks, they attend 32.5 hours per week.

In addition to the internships, the students complete a Level 1 Diploma in Employability with support from a college tutor, a learning support assistant, and an employment advisor from Pluss.

It is a proven method of moving people with learning disabilities from being dependent on tax-paying employees. Project SEARCH Derriford, Plymouth, is a multi-award-winning project that has outstanding results
