Care is provided by friendly staff to ensure our residents are well cared for and provided for. Most of our staff are trained to Level 2 in health and social care and are encouraged to develop their skills further to ensure they respect the privacy, dignity, and independence of the residents 24 hours a day.

We welcome short- and long-term stays, respite, and day care. Potential residents are welcome to visit the home and spend a few hours with us before making a decision to join us.

Accommodation

The property has been carefully adapted and extended to provide a high standard of accommodation and facilities.

The home offers two comfortable and sunny sitting rooms that overlook the gardens, together with a separate quiet area offering plenty of space for residents and visitors alike.

Bedrooms are all individually decorated and furnished, and residents are encouraged to personalise their own rooms. Some rooms have far-reaching views of Plymouth Sound. All bedrooms and bathrooms/toilets have call alarms fitted in case of emergency. The upper floors are easily reached by either a lift or chairlifts.

When a room is due to be decorated or about to have a new owner, they will be consulted and encouraged to participate in the choosing of the colours, etc. for their room.

Durnsford Lodge provides 20 single bedrooms and 4 double rooms. This consists of 4 single en suite bedrooms, 2 double en suite bedrooms, 16 single rooms, and 2 double rooms.

There are south-facing gardens and a raised terrace area, and on sunny days, residents and visitors can sit outside and enjoy the well-stocked gardens. There is a large car parking area for residents, families, and visitors.

Activities

We offer a range of activities, from visiting entertainers to in-house activities such as bingo, board games, card games, and armchair exercises. Some of our residents also enjoy painting, knitting, crocheting, and making cards for special occasions such as birthdays and Christmas.

Once a week we have a Pamper afternoon where the residents can have their nails painted, hair done with a glass of wine or a drink of their choice, some chocolates, etc

Twice a year in the spring and autumn, clothes direct come to visit, and this gives our residents an opportunity to try on and buy some clothes for themselves. This is a very popular activity, as many do not have the chance to go shopping, and they love going through the racks of clothes and making their own choices. On a daily basis, we have a trolley service where the residents can buy confectionery, toiletries, cards, etc., which they also enjoy.

Other activities include reminiscent sessions run by Plymouth City Council, outings to the Moors, the Hoe, and the Zoo. We also arrange visits to local pubs, afternoon tea at garden centres, and tea rooms.

We hold parties on a regular basis for all their birthdays and special occasions such as Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Halloween, and Christmas, just to name a few.

We also have barbecues and a fete where everyone is welcome to come along for a social get-together.

Every year, a few of the residents go to a party arranged by Stoke Damerel Church and a tea dance in the Guildhall in Plymouth arranged by Age Concern.

End-of-life care

We aim to provide end-of-life care in a warm and passionate manner that demonstrates professionalism, giving support, respect, (love), kindness, and finally prioritising the pass-over in a spiritually contented, peaceful time for all of those involved in that person's end-of-life.
