Secondary Schools in Plymouth
Secondary schools provide education for children aged 11-16 years old, following on from primary school.
It covers Key Stages 3 and 4 of the national curriculum. Key Stage 3 is years 7-9 (ages 11-14) and Key Stage 4 is years 10-11 (ages 14-16).
In Key Stage 3, students study a broad range of compulsory subjects building on the foundations from primary school. This includes English, maths, science, history, geography, languages, music, art, PE, etc.
In Key Stage 4, students have some subject choices and mostly study towards GCSE (or equivalent) examinations which they take at the end of year 11.
Secondary schools can be comprehensive (state-funded), grammar (selective state schools), academies (state-funded but independently run), or private/independent schools.
